Manikaran is the name given to this place is connected to an ancient story that Parvati (Wife of Lord Shiva) has a Mani (Gemstone) in their earings and they lost it. Mahadev ordered all his Ganas (Follower of Shiva) to search that mani. But they all failed in this task. Then it came to know that Sheshnagg has that mani in Patallok. All the Devtas then requested the sheshnaag to give it back to the Shiva. Sheshnaag gave the mani back with anger hiss and with that anger expression the Hot Spring generates.
Many persons who suffer from Skin diseases come to bath in this hot water and it is beneficial for them. Many thermophilic bacterias are present in these hot springs. So when you are taking bath in the hot water ensure you must take your head out of it. Otherwise, you can faint due to these bacterias.

Scientifically it is due to the presence of sulfur in it. “Khir Ganga” Name originates due to its white color of the water.
